Coronary Artery Disease

What is Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary Artery Disease or also known as Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and Ischemic Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death in the US under Cardiovascular diseases. According to the recent statistics of AHA(American Heart Association), cardiac events are expected to occur in about 1,055,000 for individuals and 720,000 of these are new and 335,000 for the recurring cardiovascular cases in the year 2019. The disease was responsible for 840,768 deaths in 2016 and it increased by about 31.8% in the span of 10 years.

In recent studies, men are more likely to have a higher risk of having CAD than women, but at age 70 both are more prone to have increased risk. Those individuals who have a family history also have a higher risk, particularly when their parents have been diagnosed before the age of 55. Also, an unhealthy lifestyle is one major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

What are the causes

CAD occurs when the blood vessels (coronary arteries) are being blocked by atherosclerosis, which is a collection of plague. These plagues are usually caused by fat and cholesterol which harden and build up inside the walls of the arteries over time. When this happens, these block the flow of your blood to the heart which is the major cause of arrhythmia, heart failure, heart attack, and death.

  1. Angina – Chest pain and discomfort
  2. Heart attack
  3. Tightness in the arms, back, and jaw
  4. Dizziness
  5. Nausea
  6. Palpitations

What are the common treatments

The treatment usually involves shifting into a healthier lifestyle, prescribed medications, and some medical procedures. Here is some list of medication involved in the treatment:

  1. Aspirin
  2. Calcium channel blockers
  3. Ranolazine
  4. Nitroglycerin
