The reality of living in a pandemic has become particularly challenging for families of older loved ones or loved ones of special needs. Family members always have full plates, gloves, sanitizers, and masks the whole time. The increased possibility of COVID-19 and what it entails for the elderly is obviously daunting to families today. Here’s how to know if your loved ones need a home healthcare service.

Types of home healthcare service

Home care health services help assist a person to live safely at home. People who need assistance to live on their own usually avail these services. Trained professionals – such as nurses, aides, and therapists – typically give these services, depending on the person’s needs.

There are different types of service:

The first type of healthcare service is personal care and companionship. These professionals help your loved ones with daily living activities such as taking a bath, putting one’s clothes, eating, doing personal hygiene, and another task. Its goal is to assist the client to be safe and also to enable independence.

The second type of healthcare service is known as the private duty nursing care, which is long-term and availed by clients who are usually experiencing a chronic illness or may have an injury or a disability. Trained professionals, such as nurses, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists, are hired to ensure quality care to the client.

The third type of healthcare service is called home health care. The care offered is short-term and is physician-directed, wherein the patient will be assisted in recovering from an illness, injury, or hospital stay.

Important tips

Here are some tips you might have to consider to know that your home care health services are a fit for your loved one.

1. Figure out what type of care your loved one needs?

Mentioned above are the different types of home healthcare service. Try to look and check about what are the diverse needs of your loved one. Does he/she have a chronic illness? An injury? Or does he need assistance only for a short time or a long time? Figuring out these needs will aid you in knowing the right home care service you will need.

2. Always ask your physician about it

If you are considering a home healthcare service, your physician can also help you decide on what is the best fit for home care service for your loved one. Your physician will also leave important notes that are essential to the type of care needed.

3. Consider the preference of your loved one

Home healthcare services’ major goal is to aid in giving the client quality health care at home. One aspect of quality health care is the ability of the caregiver to interact with his patient.

Your loved one will be the one who will be with the caretaker for a long time. It is also essential to have your loved one’s opinion about who will take care of them.

4. Look for a caregiver who can easily “connect” with your loved one and family.

Rapport is always a big part of having caregivers. Caregivers who can easily adjust to a situation and does his or her job with passion will ensure that your loved one is well-taken care off.

The quality of health of your loved one is improving.

Conclusion

May it be recovering from an injury or maintaining the quality of life, an effective caregiver will aid in the betterment of your loved one’s health. A visible improvement of your loved one’s health is a good sign that your home care health service is useful.

Choosing the right home healthcare service will enable your loved one to live and recover quickly. Giving them the best care that you want them to have. Understandably, we want to care for them ourselves. But certain situations, merely caring is not enough. This way, they get the much-needed care that they deserve. You can rest easy knowing that they are well-taken care of.

Some consider caregiving as a duty or a responsibility that should not go wrong. Some caregivers suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, irritation, and sadness. They might also experience negative feelings at once. Moreover, as responsibilities increase, they may lose time for themselves. Below are some suggestions that might help you to be an effective caregiver.

Understand the patient

The first thing that a caregiver should pay close attention to is the condition of the patient. Being knowledgeable about the person that they are taking care of is a huge help. Not just about their physical health, but also their emotional and spiritual health. Start by learning about the patient’s illness. Keep a record of medical appointments, their medication, and dosage. Learn more about the emotional well-being of the patient and provide them emotional support. The hospice team can help you manage your caregiving duties. Hospice care provides emotional, physical, and spiritual support not just to the patient, but also to their family and caregiver.

Make time for yourself

You cannot expect to provide proper care if you are not taking care of yourself properly. Balancing time for yourself and caregiving might be tricky and overwhelming. Caregiving can give you a rollercoaster of emotions. In some times, you might find it rewarding and fun. However, sometimes it can be draining emotionally and physically. As a caregiver, you would probably think that there are not enough hours in a day. It is necessary to take a break, so you do not feel burned out. Do not isolate yourself and stay social. Find ways to reconnect with people and the activities you love. Practice time management by creating a time log and then take note of how much time you spend doing a specific task and the task you can ask other people to do. Use that time to participate in the activities that will help you to restore your sense of connection and contentment.

When and how to ask for help

Caregiving tasks change as the patient’s health changes, and caregivers might find it overwhelming. Doing all the tasks alone is not a good idea. If you are too tired, you are most likely to have a big chance of getting sick. You must know when you need help. Asking for help is what caregivers need to do at one point or another. You can start by making a list of your caregiving tasks and take note of the things that you might need help with. Friends and family can assist you in your caregiving duties from time to time. Take time to recognize your limits, figure out what tasks are better to leave to the professionals. Consider respite care. Respite care can be provided at home or in a healthcare facility. They can help you to take care of your patient while you are taking your break. Local support groups can help you to communicate with other caregivers. You can learn a lot from each other’s experiences, and it can give you comfort knowing you are not alone.

Conclusion

Remember therapists, counselors, and support groups are not just for the mentally ill individual. Seeking medical assistance will help you become more conscious of how you are doing. Find a local group that will help you locate programs in your city.

Many people suffer and die alone at this time because of COVID-19. The pandemic induced a fatality ratio of 3.46 percent worldwide as of the 4th week of August 2020.

Families and friends cannot be on the COVID-19 positive patients’ side even on their last moment. They are unable to touch and hug their loved ones. The patients not infected with COVID-19 are also affected by the lockdown rules

Hospice patients, for instance, avoided physical contact due to the changes to visitation rules.

What are hospices? And how does COVID-19 affect it?

Hospice care provides comfort to patients who have severe health conditions. This kind of care also seeks physical, emotional, and spiritual support during their remaining times. Committed hospice providers aim to extend their care to the family, and the bereavement period after the patient has departed. It typically involves close contact between hospice staff, patients, and their families.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare providers implement restrictions to observe physical distancing to reduce the virus’s spread.

Facilities or nursing homes where hospice services took place had to reduce the patients from exposure to potential illnesses. They have to prevent the probability of infecting the patients and hospice staff, too. They enforce new restrictions such as limiting or prohibiting family visits.

Hospice care provided at home also follows new restricted recommendations regarding wearing personal protective equipment for the providers.

Hospice support staff may also provide other services through a helpline that is available 24/7 amid pandemic and stay-at-home rules.

Coronavirus restrictions struck everyone hard

Social distancing limits the comfort and emotional support that the patients would have received, especially when they need sympathy alongside themselves.

The same goes for the patient’s family. The grief and counseling support they would have received personally is currently running over the phone.

On the other hand, implementing such drastic measures is also tricky for hospice staff. Keeping healthy and able to come to work during this time of pandemic is also a challenge for hospice staff. Even though they also need to distance themselves from their family, because they need to isolate so that they can be at work.

Edo Banach, president and CEO of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization discussed the needs of hospice and palliative care providers during the COVID-19 outbreak.

In 2017, 4,515 hospices across the United States attended more than 1.49 million patients throughout the year. However, with all the charity shops continuing closing and fundraising events postponed because of the pandemic, hospices are currently facing funds’ insufficiency.

“You can’t argue that nursing homes shouldn’t be a priority. They are hotspots, and they are inevitably going to receive additional scrutiny and additional support. However, on the downside of this [COVID-19] curve — and on the upside of the next one — we’re going to see increased demand for [hospice and palliative care] services,” Banach said. He underscored that protection and support is also important.
